Block recently won the opportunity to create signage and wayfinding material for the City of Perth’s new Public Library. Designed by internationally-renowned Kerry Hill Architects, the library is the first civic building to be built by the City of Perth since the acclaimed Perth Concert Hall which opened in 1973.

It is the second time that Block has been lucky enough to collaborate with KHA on a major cultural building in Perth. Previously, Block provided the branding and wayfinding system for the Hill-designed State Theatre Centre of Western Australia.

The unique circular design of the Library provides some interesting wayfinding challenges. The project is due for completion in late 2014.

Block has been commissioned by the WA Forest Alliance to create a campaign for the upcoming state election. In a bid to educate Western Australians on the potential profit to the state by stopping logging, Block has created an outdoor and online public relations dissemination that centres around a striking image and headline.

Research published by the Australia Institute has confirmed that logging is not only harmful to the environment, but is also costing the State millions in potential profits – an estimated excess of $400 million a year.

Depending on the carbon price, the WA Government stands to earn between $16 million and $438 million per annum between 2013 and 2032 through the sale of carbon credits if it were to stop logging the native forests in its South West. The findings are backed by separate research that highlights the unviable position of the Forest Products Commission, which has made a meagre $15 million (post tax) profit since its formation in 2000.

WA Forest Alliance spokesperson Jess Beckerling said stopping logging would also benefit former timber towns in the State’s South West.

“The money earned by selling carbon credits won’t just benefit the remaining timber towns, but will benefit all Western Australians and protect our forest legacy,” Ms Beckerling said.

“It really makes sense economically and commercially for WA to develop policies to stop the logging of native forests in our South West.”

WAFA engaged Block to assist in the campaign – a strategic move ahead of the upcoming State election. The WAFA is set to make its mark in strategic areas during the election campaign.

Block is excited to welcome back the Perth International Arts Festival to its roster of clients in a move that will see the two working together for a second time. Block also worked with the Perth International Arts Festival as their strategic partner from 2005-2009.

“After a long association with the Festival, it is great to be back working with a brand we have always loved and with an artistic director with such a fresh vision,” said Block’s Creative Director, Mark Braddock.

In the Festival’s second year with artistic director Jonathan Holloway, Block will create a new campaign and brand system that will be integrated into all of the Festival’s communications for the 2013 event, which begins in February.

“Block has a long tradition of branding multi-arts events and we look forward to creating work that will market the State’s premier arts event and define its place on the international scene,” said Braddock.

Founded in 1953 by the University of Western Australia, the Perth International Arts Festival is the longest running international arts festival in Australia, and Western Australia’s premier cultural event. The Festival has developed a worldwide reputation for excellence in its international program, the presentation of new works and the highest quality artistic experiences for its audience. For 60 years, the Festival has welcomed to Perth some of the world’s greatest living artists and now connects with over 800,000 people each year.

Block has been appointed by the 2012 National Year of Reading (WA) to raise awareness of illiteracy in Western Australia and provide hope to the many struggling with reading and writing.

With the number of functionally illiterate people across Australia making up a staggering percentage of the population, the need to provide resources and much-needed help, whilst destigmatising their struggle is imperative.

“The National Year of Reading is an opportunity to bring attention to the incredibly vital need for literacy in our community. We have been struck by the fact that so many Australians struggle to read newspapers, follow a recipe, make sense of timetables or understand instructions on a medicine bottle,” said Tanya Sim, Managing Director at Block.

A State Library Foundation of WA initiative, the program is steered by a group comprising representatives from the Department of Education, Rio Tinto, and Read Write Now. The group will work with Block to create a predominantly radio-driven campaign that will be supported by local press and social media insertions.

“We are excited by the opportunity to work with a team of dedicated and passionate organisations in our community and to create a campaign that will enable the hundreds of thousands in our community to find support and the resources needed to improve their literacy,” said Ms Sim.

Block has launched the Fremantle Dockers Football Club 2012 campaign by telling punters “No One’s Stronger”.

Over the last six months, Block has produced more than 100 brand elements for the Fremantle Dockers – including a 30-second TV commercial, print, radio, web skins, match-day collateral, corporate sponsorship packs, ticketing, brochures and community promotions.

The campaign builds on the success of the Fremantle Dockers’ rebranding, which was unveiled in October 2010, by integrating the brand visually and strategically across all media channels.

“Consolidating much of our work with Block has meant we can deploy resources where they will make the largest difference. This means that we are spending time on creating design solutions that work and only need to be ‘re-skinned’ rather than reinvented, year-to-year. There is still plenty of work to be done to bring the brand to where we ultimately want it, but this approach has provided us with the framework to achieve our goals,” says Scott Gooch, general manager of commercial partners at Fremantle Dockers Football Club.

Since the Fremantle Football Club first appointed Block two years ago, we have worked together to create one of the most visually consistent, striking brands in the Australian Football League.

Producing so many campaign elements to kick off this year’s Fremantle Dockers season was no easy feat, but it does demonstrate how far the brand has evolved over the last couple of years.

It is now an integrated brand with a tagline that taps into the passion of the Fremantle Dockers’ supporters and encourages them to actively engage in the strength of the club.

Block has been appointed to Tourism WA’s roster of design agencies, selected on the strength of its creative and strategic offering.

Block is experienced in working with government and cultural agencies including MRA (Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority), Perth International Arts Festival and State Theatre Centre.

The agency will now work with Tourism WA to provide a diverse suite of graphic design services including press, publications, digital, printed material, multimedia and out-of-home.

Tanya Sim, Managing Director at Block, says: “Block was recently appointed as Leighton Properties’ branding and creative agency, and joined The Department of Human Services’ roster of agencies in November last year, so joining WA Tourism’s design roster tops off a great six months for Block.”

Tourism WA is the State Government agency responsible for promoting Western Australia as an extraordinary holiday destination. It focuses on marketing the State; developing, attracting and promoting major sporting, cultural and business events; and developing significant tourism infrastructure and projects.
