As it turns out, beer proves to be the perfect lens through which to explore our state's development, visual culture, diversity and social issues. The role alcohol has played in our history is a complex and, at times, challenging one. This is something the fascinating exhibition tackles head-on.
From the dominance of the monolithic Swan Brewery in the 70s and 80s to the craft brewing revolution sparked by Matilda Bay in the 80s and 90s, to the rise of Little Creatures, and Gage Roads Brewery, and, finally, the explosion of brewery start-ups over the last decade, brewing in WA has so much to explore.
In honour of the exhibition Otherside Brewery's Rhys Lopez has created Gilded Ale, his tribute to the early history of colonial beer-making. It is loosely based on a recipe uncovered in the State Collection.
